Is it broken? Let’s take a look.
Ouch! Not sure if it’s broken but it really hurts. You need to get this looked at for sure. This is a story blog of what happens next when you visit me, Dr. Bob Wolf at Alabama Orthopaedic Center in Homewood, Alabama. First, we get you over to our super high tech x-ray machine.
We will want to examine the entire area of the injury and make sure we see every part that may be injured.
Next, I come over and visit with you. Glad to see you but Im sorry you are hurting. I just need you to tell me what REALLY happened. You were skateboarding weren’t you? (:
I will inspect the injured area and test for range of motion, signs of fracture, etc.
If it is broken, we will want to make sure it is re-set correctly and then protected properly from further injury as it heals.
If a pre-made cast is not sufficient for the type of injury you have, we will bring in our expert craftsman, Brian, who will fit you with a sweet custom cast.
This is how he does it: first he measures the affected area that will need to be protected.
Then he will measure the contour and outline of the body part.
Using an x-acto knife, he will hand carve out the precise form that is needed from the plastic casting material.
Looks perfect!
Once he has the shape he needs, he will set the plastic form in the hot water heater so that it will become moldable.
Yes it says ‘Food Warmer” on the machine but we don’t use it for cooking much here in the office…
Brian will then wrap this newly formed material around the broken bone.
With great precision, the cast is done perfectly and hardens quickly.
All we need to do next is apply the velcro material to help keep it all together and we have a custom made cast that is both water proof and removable!
Now its time to get a sucker. You’ve been a good boy. Heal well and take it easy for a while!
